Lorraine Kerwood, founder and Executive Director, is a finalist for the Volvo for Life's Environmental Heroes Award, to be granted in March 2008. PARTNERS IN SOLIDARITY Partners in Solidarity (PS) is a project of NSR. PS was started to support rural Guatemalan schools, clinics and NGOs in their efforts to provide education, health care and related opportunities to the poorest communities in Guatemala. Every year, PS fills a container with donated computers and other much-needed goods and delivers them to highland communities in the Departments of Quetzaltenango, Solola, San Marcos, Huehuetenango and Guatemala. Matthew Rutman, founder and Program Coordinator, along with his committed staff of volunteers, have immersed themselves in the heart of the Mayan community, acquiring indigenous social and language skills. Their non-intrusive efforts and respect for the culture of the Mayan people have earned them the trust of the communities in which they work and live. More information can be found at www.partnersinsolidarity.org. Rutman coordinates operations between INEPAS, PS and NSR. INEPAS INEPAS is a civil non-profit-making association that uses the income from its Language School to fund community development programs in Quetzaltenango. It is the only Spanish school in Guatemala to be recognized by UNESCO. Message from General Coordinator Maria Antonieta Ixcoteyac Velásquez, a qualified social worker: "INEPAS came into existence in response to the evident problems with the Guatemalan educational system. Faced with severe socio-economic limitations, it does not meet the basic educational needs of the student population. The high levels of illiteracy, poverty and lack of opportunity for personal development have a fundamental effect on children and teenagers throughout rural regions of Guatemala. THis situation severely limits the vision of an economic growth with equality, especially in today's global environment, which is increasingly competitive and demands highly qualified human resources." |
THE COMPUTER LABORATORY PROJECT The most recent project of the Education Support Program was the implementation of 30 computer laboratories, located in 21 rural communities in and around Quetzaltenango. The installation of the computer laboratories was carried out in collaboration with NextStep Recycling's International Placements Program, PArtners in Solidarity. More information can be found at www.inepas.org WHAT YOU CAN DO! Getting involved is so easy! Many businesses own fully-functional computers that are no longer needed. All you need to do is contact New World Brands, tell us what you have and where you are, and we will tell you how to ship your obsolete items directly to NextStep Recycling. We can answer questions about the types of computers, support hardware and/or software the project requires, as well as security concerns you might have. NSR is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, so your contribution is tax deductible (contact your tax advisor for information). Additionally, Network Verde needs cash donations to cover the costs of shipping and administration. All donations should be made to NextStep Recycling.
